The Secrets of Ice Cream Success

 Carlo never wanted to take over the family ice cream business, at fourteen he already had school and the terror of talking to girls to occupy his ever anxious mind, but when the odious Haverton Hill tried to buy the factory from him after his father’s death, an unexpected sense of defiance arose.

With the “help” of his friends, Carlo sets out to cope with incompetent staff, sabotage, strange goings on in the basement, a spooky book with a mind of its own and the knowledge that those little specks in the vanilla ice cream may not be as innocent as they seem... Oh, and he's just been asked to a party by a girl! Summer holidays were not supposed to be this interesting.

The Write Fantastic - Terry Pratchett

At the end of last week I had decided to follow up two recent posts about the books I remember reading as a child  and the books I studied at school , with a third post looking at some of the books I chose to read as a young adult and how that shaped my reading from then on.  Almost certainly that post, had I written it, would have featured the books of Terry Pratchett quite heavily, because there was no doubt that at the age of 15 Terry was my favourite author. More so than even Tolkien , Douglas Adams , Raymond E Feist , Grant Naylor , Michael Crichton  and whoever else I was reading at the time. My two young nephews are just at the age of discovering reading for themselves .   As much as it's a pleasure to have an adult read to you as a child, the joy of discovering stories for yourself is a huge step and it's fascinating to watch the boys pick up a book and slowly lose themselves in the story, wide eyed and full of determined concentration. This is still new to them after all, so every word is important and must be afforded all due consideration. There are many activities we throw ourselves into as children that we naturally lose interest in, forget or that become unacceptable as we reach adulthood. Playing with toys, watching cartoons, climbing trees or running around waving our hands in the air and screaming at full volume are rarely listed as pastimes on the average Curriculum Vitae. (Pity...
